Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell

Tuesday, April 14, 2015
We make no secret of our love for Sufjan Stevens here at MfaMLG. After five years, we have some new music to listen to. His last album, The Age Of Adz, was a huge departure to what we are used to from Sufjan. Carrie & Lowell is a return to form.

Carrie & Lowell is a reference to his mother and stepfather. His mother left him and his siblings when he was a baby. The album itself is an attempt to reconcile the many confusing feelings he has when it comes to his mother. Though he was with her when she passed away, many of his memories come from the summers he spent with her in Oregon.

Death With Dignity kicks of the album and encapsulates the many feelings we all have about the loss of a loved one:

I feel like Sufjan is having a musical conversation with his mother. There is a lot of ground to cover here. His mother who was diagnosed bipolar and schizophrenic also struggled with addiction would leave a lot of questions and conflicting thoughts.

Eugene is another stand out song. Even though memories are painful, Sufjan finds some comfort in that pain.

All in all, this a stand out album. I like it even more every time I listen to it. The lyrics are evocative and the music is beautiful.

Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell - 3.5 stars
