Wednesday Flashback: Gene Pitney

Wednesday, April 02, 2014
Not many people know Gene Pitney by name or look, but if you were listening to the radio in the early 60's you'll recognize his songs. He was never a huge hit, but he still recorded some songs that are worth remembering and listening to.

Little known facts:
  • He wrote hits for others, too, including "He's a Rebel" for the Crystals and "Hello Mary Lou" for Ricky Nelson.
  • Rumor has it he played piano when the Stones were recording in 1964 on their debut album.
  • He sang the original version of "24 hours from Tulsa" recreated in The Commitments in all it's weird and wonderful awesomeness.

How is that for random?

Here are a few of my favorites:

Only Love Can Break a Heart
Town Without Pity
It Hurts to Be in Love
