It's The End Of The World As We Know It (and I feel fine)

To listen too many of the paranoid bent, the U.S. is on the verge of falling and being replaced with a totalitarian fascist, communist, sharia law muslim state. Others believe we are already there, what with the massive data sweeps by the NSA and our unspoken drone war.

I grew up in the 70's and 80's when the cold war was on the edge of hot and we all lived with the threat of nuclear annihilation, even if Grandpa Reagan and Sylvester Stallone were working hard to bring down the Soviet Union.

I, for one, am a bit of a pessimist, waiting for the other shoe to drop. Things can always get worse. As long as I have music, though, every thing will be just fine. Here are six apocalyptic songs for our Friday Pick Six.

  1. Nine Inch Nails - "The Day The World Went Away” - The darkness of life is frequently found in NIN's catalog. No one does despair like Trent Reznor, so why not visit his opus on Armageddon.
  2. Tears For Fears - “Famous Last Words” - A lovely song, tender and sweet song about a couple spending their last moments together as the world dies in a nuclear holocaust.
  3. R.E.M. - “It’s The End Of The World As We Know It” - Famously, this song was played in that apocalyptic movie classic, Independence Day. Lot's of name dropping and a slacker's refrain of I feel fine there is no poppier way to celebrate the end of the world.
  4. Muse - "Apocalypse Please” - With lead-singer Matthew Bellamy, singing "this the end", Muse brings big guitars with a arena worthy hooks to the Apocalypse.
  5. Morrissey - "Everyday Is Like Sunday” - Bleak post nuclear war with a single survivor, Morrisey uses ironically upbeat orchestrations to claim "come come come nuclear bomb".
  6. The Clash - "London Calling" - "London is drowning and I live by the river" seems even more apocalyptic now, what with sea levels rising. The Clash gave us a syncopated bass line that was the march to oblivion.
