Flashback Wednesday: Music from the 50's

Wednesday, August 21, 2013
I'm a huge fan of 50's and 60's music. For some reason this music struck a chord in me when I was just a kid- and I not only listened to it on oldies radio- I still listen to it . When we got our new car with Sirius xm I fell in love with the 50's on 5 and 60's on 6 stations. They have made my road travel oh so much nicer to endure.

I usually pick up my mother on Saturdays for a shopping day and I thought what a treat it would be for her to listen to music from the 50's. She was born in 1936 so by the time the 50's rolled around she was age 14-24, prime time for music appreciation!

But the songs they played on the station- songs I could sing along to most always- meant nothing to her. It was like she was hearing almost all of them for the first time? How could this be? My mom always liked music. I remember her singing to me when I was a child and she would play Rogers and Hammerstein records and The Lettermen and the Righteous Brothers in the 60's.

It turns out she recalls listening to only very 'white' music in the 50's: the Everly Brothers, Peggy Lee. She loved Mario Lanza though that was pretty radical for her. She didn't listen to rock-n-roll in the early forms (Elvis, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino) and she did not listen to 'black' music (Sam Cooke, Muddy Waters, Billie Holiday, the Coasters). I'll be honest- I was pretty surprised and really shocked by this revelation. How could anyone listen to that wonderful music now- and NOT imagine being moved by it? Sam Cooke? I would have given up anything to hear him in person- listen to that voice made of butter- maybe bear his children. Okay, maybe that is going too far but honestly- no Sam Cooke? No Muddy Waters?

If your knowledge of 50's music is a little weak, I'd encourage you to go and get some updating on it right away. Amazing stuff- a real turning point in our musical history - the foundation for the 60's for sure. Enjoy!
