Blurred Lines...(New-ish music Tuesday)

Watching the Today Show the other day there was a discussion about the 'song of the summer' and this one got the most votes among the panel- the male panel. The women found it offensive and wondered if the only reason it got any votes at all was the uncensored version of the video.

First, let's just get this out of the way: Robin Thicke is hot.

That said, I have listened to the song a few times now. I'm not particularly into music that contains rap (I'm old) and if I listen to it at all it's imbedded into something by Bruno Mars or Maroon Five and it's pretty cleaned up. This isn't particularly cleaned up.

But the song is catchy to listen to, and while I'm having a little trouble envisioning it as the 'song of the summer' (I can't see a lot of girls playing this loudly with their windows rolled down) perhaps I'm just too old to get it.

The lyrics- yes- they can certainly be seen as offensive. But offensive to old middle class white women, like the ones on the Today Show, and I'm pretty much guessing that is not the target audience. I would imagine a younger girl would like it just fine- and not find it at all offensive.

The lines between what we in the 'establishment' find tasteful and what is currently valid are....blurred. Maybe this song is telling us that those younger than us find the lines between what is 'off limits' and 'acceptable' blurred, too.  The world is a very different place than it was 20 or 30 years ago when the rest of us were first out there trying it on for size.

Have a listen- and tell us what you think?

  1. He looks nice...hot? Not so sure about that.
The song is okay. Nice beat...but I've heard better.
The video...why does everything has to be so sexual...I mean, don't get me wrong...I am pretty open, but it gets old...
Good grief...and please...our generation is so much different from this generation...much more adjustment needed, etc.
I am really trying to find the right words to try and say what I really mean, but it's tough. So much to say...so many thoughts crossing my mind...
