Teenage Wasteland - Teen Angst in The 70’s

Friday, February 22, 2013

I know this pick six is a day late, but I had a bit too much drink last night. For this pick six, I tried to think of six songs that summed up my teen angst in 1978/1979. Here is my list:
  1. Baba O'Riley - The Who; Behind Blue Eyes could of easily made this list too. No one was better than The Who at writing songs of teen angst, except maybe Springsteen.
  2. I'm Eighteen - Alice Cooper; I am eighteen and I know everything and nothing. Alice Cooper’s ode to being young but getting old is still relevant.
  3. Movin’ Out - Billy Joel; No one wants to grow up especially when the outlook is grim.
  4. Teenage Lobotomy - Ramones; Now, I would never say that the Ramones wrote songs with deep meaning, but Teenage Lobotomy sums up that feeling of angst of having your head filled with ‘normal” behavior.
  5. Career Opportunities - The Clash; Yes, I know this is pretty obvious, but my list of teen angst songs would not be complete without the Clash.
  6. I'm Not Angry - Elvis Costello; Your girl dumped you for someone else. Doesn’t get much angsty than that.

Love this list of pick six! Very fitting for the youth of the 70's.
