Spotlight-People Making a Difference- Half the Sky

Friday, December 14, 2012
Those of us at MFAMLG are all saddened and heartsick about the events in Connecticut today. Our  thoughts and condolences go out to the entire community. Because we feel so strongly about the welfare of all children- we are going to continue highlighting the spotlight blogs.

The book Half the Sky has spawned a movement. The film is gut wrenching to watch but the countries and movements they spotlight are a wonderful testament to the human spirit and a deep determination to bring change to the world.

I learned something very valuable watching this film. I always believed that I was pretty well informed about women's issues worldwide. I studied women's studies in college and have been peripherally aware of some of the issues in African nations for many, many years. What I didn't really understand before watching this series was that in many of these countries, the women do not want or desire change.

Living in a first world country I always assumed everyone knew they were oppressed. I thought it was instinctive of human nature to want freedom of body and mind. I truly did not understand that there are places in the world where there is not even an idea of oppression or self posession; that what needs to be changed in many of these countries is not the socio economic and social mores, but the very deeply rooted beliefs of the women themselves. Eye opening to be sure.

We will spotlight some individual organizations in the future, but for an introduction to this very important movement-I would highly recommend you read the book or watch the film based on it. There is much work to be done.
