Friday Pick Six - Six Sad New Year's Songs

Friday, December 28, 2012
New Year's Eve is a holiday about hope, celebration, and renewal. But you wouldn't know it to look at most songs on the subject. Most of the songs I was able to find were at the very least bittersweet, if not just bitter. Get a load of some of these choice lyrics:

"Inside I hope you know I'm dying / with my heart beside me / in shattered pieces..."

"These humans all suck / I'd rather be home, feeling violent and lonely"

"Oh, my God / this year has dealt me a horrible hand / I'll try to explain, but you won't understand."

Hope, celebration, and renewal, huh?
You know what? Never mind, I'll run with it. Here are six sad New Year's songs!

1) The New Year - Death Cab for Cutie
2) Holiday in Spain - Counting Crows
3) Calendar Marks - My Favorite Highway
4) Three Cheers for Five Years - Mayday Parade
5) Together We'll Ring in the New Year - Motion City Soundtrack
6) New Year's Eve - U2

  1. One of my favorites is Dan Fogelberg's Same Old Lang Syne and some of the lyrics there are "We drank a toast to innocence, We drank a toast to now, And tried to reach beyond the emptiness, but neither one knew how." It seems a lot of people spend new years thinking of what was lost or never found instead of what is to be. Perhaps that is part of our nature.

  2. People have diverse tastes and inclinations for music. Some lean toward the beats of Bollywood tunes while some get activated with the playing of Ghazals. A site ought to essentially have a decent blend of tunes.
