It's not the end of the world

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

These many weeks after the election, people are still beside themselves and I have started to worry for them. I have known the deep pain they are now feeling (Gore in 00, Kerry in 04) but never once did I proclaim the end of the Republic. Just because I disagree with the outcome, doesn’t mean I am ready to declare the democratic experiment over.

Of course, I have never been one to subscribe to conspiracy theories. If you buy into the myriad of conspiracies claimed by many on the extreme right, it would be easy to become convinced the world as we know it is ending.

This is the rub isn’t it? If your world view has narrowed to the point that all your news comes from the media whose business plan is to keep you scared, then there was nothing scarier than the re-election of the President.

As far as I know the President is not coming to take away your guns, round you up and send you to FEMA camps or cede authority to the UN. I know it is hard to have a President who doesn’t look like you with a strange name. I know you are worried about all the people who voted for allegedly free stuff, you know, the people you have labeled as takers, are going to drag this country down.

The world will still be spinning in 2016. We will have a new presidential election and we will have a new president. Trust me, it’s not the end of the USA or the world. You lost an election. That’s all. It happens to both sides.

If I am honest, watching you all melt down about the re-election of President Obama fills me with a bit schadenfreude. I have been good about not rubbing peoples nose in it, but I have watched from afar as many of you have become convinced our country is no more. I think you are wrong, but then, I might be in on the conspiracy, too.

  1. Well said, beautifully written. Hillary in 2016?

    1. We can only hope. I would like to see a woman president or a Latino president would be good too

I'm not good at political discussions. But you said it nicely!

  3. Really hopes we don't get put into UN run FEMA camps.
We'd never hear the end of it.

  4. I have been avoiding this subject personally because my conservative friends are so worked up about it. They also behave as though their god has abandoned them, and the country. For people who claim to have such strong beliefs, they have rather weak faith. In anything: in people, in our system. I wish some of them would read this...and calm down. Tomorrow will come, and we will all still be here.
