That smooooth sound

Friday, October 12, 2012
Yacht Rock is this weeks theme. That smooth music from the seventies & early eighties that gets in your ear and just will not go away.

This list is a tribute to that music. When I find myself needing a distraction or something to zone out to, I either go to ambient techno or Yacht Rock. Frankly, the mellow sounds of either help relax me. This is not music for people who want to dance. Unless of course it is a slow dance with a Pina Colada in one hand and a women in a linen dress in the other. Yacht Rock, accept no substitutes.

  1. Rosanna - Toto. Toto were truly great practitioners of smooth music. Toto IV, which includes Rosanna (written for Rosanna Arquette) should be in everyones record collection.
  2. I'd Really Love to See You Tonight - England Dan & John Ford Coley. Originators of the early smooth sound, Dan & John give us their smoothest groove in this one.
  3. Steal Away - Robbie Dupree. Mr. Dupree had some success after steal away, including writing a song for WWF wrestling team Strik Force, but this song granted him access into the Yacht Rock marina.
  4. Josie - Steely Dan. The kings of smooth jazz infused rock n roll, Steely Dan out smooth everyone in the Yacht Rock canon. Biting lyrics mixed with music to be mellow by, they are truly the kings of the genre.
  5. What A Fool Believes - Michael McDonald. Oh yes, Michael McDonald. The man I blame for ruining the Doobies, but hey the picked him for the band, so what do I know. McDonald honed his smooth music stylings singing back up on several Steely Dan songs and shows he learned his lessons well.
  6. I’m Your Captain (Closer To Home) – Grand Funk Railroad. I hesitate to Grand Funk Railroad a Yacht Rock band, but this American Band (wink) shows off some smooth skills with this one.
