Wednesday Flashback: 1971

Wednesday, August 08, 2012
When New Year 1971 rolled through I was twelve years old. I turned 13 in April of that year, and that summer I had my first serious first 'real' kiss...and my first liberated moment. (I decided to go braless!)

I was just getting into boys and boys liked cars. I wanted a Mustang or a Dodge Charger. Orange preferably.

The academy award voters were watching the "French Connection" and "Dirty Harry" at the movies but my friends and I were watching "Harold and Maude" and "Shaft".

Had  I been a few years older, like my first crush John Pawluk (who was all of 19 that summer) I would have been listening to Zeppelin or Jethro Tull. But I was 13 in the Summer of 1971, and I was just discovering what it meant to dream about a guy whose hair always fell in his eyes.

Here are some tunes to take you back to my backseat in 1971:

1. Maggie May: Rod Stewart
2. Betcha by Golly Wow: Stylistics
3. A Horse With No Name: America
4. Love Her Madly: Doors
5. If: Bread

  1. I was 13 as well and "in love" with Fred, whose hair did indeed fall in his eyes. I wore his ID bracelet and he wrote out all the words to "If" and gave it to me. I kept it for the longest time...

  2. my parents were still married in '71
