Wednesday Flashback: Discovering Led Zeppelin 1977

Wednesday, July 11, 2012
I hadn't been completely locked in a closet during the 1970's. I knew who Led Zeppelin were, and had many times sat on the beach in SoCal listening to "Stairway to Heaven" and "Whole Lotta Love". I had heard some of their other music on the radio on occasion. I liked it, but that was about as far as that went.

In 1977 I was living in a dormitory in Ellensburg, Washington. It was the kind of place where there were sort of apartments, and each floor had 4 of them. Two were for girls, two for guys. The 'guys next door' were major Zeppelin fans. I am talking 24 hours a day, 7 days a week Zeppelin fans. I would sometimes wander over to their place, sit on someone's bed, partake of a little herbal remedy they grew themselves in their study room...and zone out to Zeppelin. It opened up the bands songs in a wispy, foggy kind of way that still comes back when I hear thems. For those of us in that little room in 1977, we were not listening to music...we were discovering everything there was to discover in sound, love, life, passion, motion and that which can only be seen in a minds eye.

And while we're here in the past...I know Robert Plant was supposed to be the 'hot' one..he with his golden locks and tight pants that answered the question 'do you dress right or left?'...but I was a Jimmy Paige fan. Always was. Still am.
