Friday Pick Six: Essential Tom Petty

Friday, June 15, 2012
This week my husband of 30 years and I renewed our vows. There is not a person in the world that I would rather spend every moment of my day with than him. But if I could pick an afternoon, a week to spend with someone else...it might just be Tom Petty.

Jay introduced me to Petty in 1982. He had been listening to him for quite awhile but I had only ever heard "Stop Draggin' my Heart Around" with Stevie and honestly- I had trouble understanding him. He kind of grated on me in that song...and I thought he mumbled his way through it.

Oh how little I understood then. Tom is uber-cool. Tom doesn't mumble...he sings softly enough to make you feel like you are the only person he is talking to at all....and he does it with a subtle sexiness that is- quite honestly- irresistible.

Because his songs are so closely tied to Jay, it is always Jay I think of when I hear Tom sing. So here is my pick six of essential Petty songs, dedicated to the one I love.

1. "Breakdown" - I know I've talked about this one in other blogs, it's OUR song...it was a song Jay sung to me when I was starry eyed and crazy in love...I still feel that when I hear this song- that new love- you're killing me here- kind of feeling.

2. "American Girl" - She was an American girl, raised on promises. She couldn't help thinkin', that there was a little more to life somewhere else..." Oh yeah...he understands allright.

3. "I won't back down" - My anthem when I'm feeling pretty down and out by life. "I'll stand my ground...and I won't back down".

4. "Here comes my girl" - another one of those Jay songs...because he is the only one that make me feel like this song could be about me.

5. "You don't know how it feels".  Classic Petty.

6. "The Waiting" and "You Got Lucky" - I know, I'm cheating, but I love them both and for the same reason...they talk of love and longing and surviving and....standing up no matter what. Love it. Love him. Enjoy!
