Opening Lines - Why Me?

MedicatedI always have story starts in my head, though I don't always write them down. This one has been floating around my head for a couple weeks. I don't know where it's headed, but if you have any ideas, let me know.

He broke the pain pill in half and crushed it with the base of his glass. He wiped off the residue on the base and licked off his fingers. He brushed the small pile of crushed pills into his glass. He added two fingers of scotch and swigged the whole concoction down.
He rinsed out the glass and poured another bit of scotch into it. He wandered back over to his desk and stared at his computer. He fired up iTunes and browsed idly for a bit until settling on Neil Young's Decade.
He clicked on the OpenOffice icon and started a new document. Taking another sip of his scotch, he looked at the blank page and sighed. He started typing;
“Why Me?”
He highlighted those two words and made it 72 point, bold, and italicized. He leaned back in his chair, swirled his scotch and sighed again.

  1. My first and firm feeling was "This MUST be opening or scene in a crime roman, with an older tough delusioned cop on the way downhill but one that will solve it"

  3. I'm thinking about a novelist who lost his perception of fiction and reality. It's all a big blur now...

  4. I'm thinking of the turmoil that faces a whistle blower and the catch 22 of that situation. Conscience forces the action and is the only release from a burden of guilt. He faces pillory and rejection but is about to "step over the line."
