Wednesday Flash Back: Carpenters Christmas Songs

Wednesday, December 14, 2011

Don’t judge me. Yes, I am actually doing a Wednesday Flashback on the Carpenters. Living in So.Cal (just miles from where they lived and grew up) everyone was crazy about them when I was a pre-teen, and I still think some of her vocals are the most lovely I’ve ever heard. This flashback is specifically about their Christmas music.

While I always have loved the traditional Christmas songs one of the more memorable ‘new’ Christmas songs I recall from my youth was The Carpenter’s “Merry Christmas Darling.” Richard Carpenter wrote the music for lyrics that had been written years before by Frank Pooler. The song was released as a single in 1970 and I do recall it from that time. It was also re-recorded and released in The Carpenters Christmas Portrait album from 1978. Some of the songs do not hold up well, but I do love her version of “Ave Maria” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”. (they can be found on Youtube though the videos are awful)
