Christmas Morning

I was raised an only child, and madpoet was raised a Jehovah's Witness, so when we were married we wanted very much to have our very unique Christmas traditions. One became a tradition out of survival instinct.

When you have three little boys in the house getting them up in the morning can be a daunting task, except for Christmas morning. On Christmas morning they would all get up long before dawn and jump around our bedroom begging to go out and see what Santa brought. When Jason was about 4 or 5, we decided we'd had enough of getting up at 4 or 5 in the morning, so we told him that they could not wake us until "the little hand was on the six" and the "big hand was on the twelve". But, to pacify them, we began what is our favorite part of Christmas: The Christmas Stocking event.

Stockings are not just stuffed with tiny little things that fit. Oh no, stockings are a big part of Christmas at our house, and they overflow to abundance. Every little gift is wrapped individually, and no matter how early they woke they could dig into those stockings to their hearts content.

It woke us anyway, of course, but the sheer joy they always had ripping open gift after gift was so much fun, that we continued this tradition all these years.

Tradition now has it that Kyle, the youngest, has to be the one to wake the brothers. And this morning, because they are all older and stay up much later, he was told by his brother he had to wait until "the little hand was on the eight" before he could wake them.

But I sit here this morning with the perfect cup of tea my husband made me, listening to Christmas music, and I can hear below me in the living room the ripping of papers and the "yes!" comments coming from all three of those once little boys. What a wonderful gift this beautiful Christmas morning.
