Great Arena Rock Anthems From The 70's

Friday, October 21, 2011
I came along at the height of the golden age of arena rock shows. It was a time when your favorite bands came through town every year. Even if you lived in a small town, the opportunity to see your favorite band or performer was never far away. It was a far cry from most rock tours today.

I have so many memories from those shows. The cannons at the AC/DC concert. David Lee Roth standing atop a stack of speakers. Freddy Mercury grabbing a crowd and lifting it up on his soaring vocals. Tom Petty crawling across the stage while he sang “Breakdown”, peering over the tops of the monitor speakers.

When I saw the Foo Fighters, I was reminded of those shows and got to thinking about the anthems you went to see those bands play. So here is this weeks pick six. Well more than pick six. Diane and I kept talking about it, coming up with more and more songs, so we settled on an even dozen. Here are six plus six great arena rock anthems of the seventies.

  1. AC/DC, “Highway to Hell” 1979
  2. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Born To Run 1975
  3. Thin Lizzy, “The Boys are Back in Town” 1975
  4. Judas Priest, “Living After Midnight” 1980
  5. Queen, We Will Rock You / We Are the Champions 1977
  6. Led Zeppelin, Black Dog 1971
  7. Cheap Trick, “Surrender” 1978
  8. Rush, Spirit of Radio 1980
  9. Deep Purple, Smoke On The Water 1972
