1986 Pick Six

Just some sweaty guys playing volleyball?
In tribute to Jason's big day, I threw together a pick six from 1986. Sure, 1986 gave us Kenny Loggins' Danger Zone from the strangely homoerotic Top Gun and Huey Lewis's Hip to be Square. And who can forget Lionel Richies' Dancing on the Ceiling? Yes, 1986 had it's share of cheesy music, frightening hairstyles and pastel Member's Only jackets, but it also had some pretty good music.  This pick six is all about what was likely to be playing on the tape deck in my VW Rabbit that year. So in no particular order, here are six songs from 1986.
  1. West End Girls - Pet Shop Boys - I am not sure why I like the Pet Shop Boys other than they were the atypical sound of British New Wave in 1986. They sound like the 80's and I mean that in a good way.
  2. Addicted To Love - Robert Palmer - This song makes it because of the video. Anorexic, fake instrument playing models are always a good way to sell your song.
  3. Bigmouth Strikes Again - The Smiths - Morrisey! That is all
  4. Big Time - Peter Gabriel - Gabriel made some of the best videos of the 80's. He was like the OK-Go of my generation. I think that Peter's former band mates in Genesis got caught up in a bit of oneupmanship when it came to videos. Search Youtube for Land Of Confusion for another bit of 80's weird and wonderful video craft from the Genesis boys.
  5. All The Things She Said - Simple Minds - The video is weird and sort of cheesy, but this is another example a song being of it's time. This is a song looking for a John Hughes film, just like their 1985 hit, Don't You Forget About Me
  6. Don't Dream It's Over - Crowded House - I can't say I was a huge Crowded House fan, but this is a great ballad. Jangly & echoey guitars and equally echoey vocals give this song that certain 80's ambience.
