Pick Six - Mixology

Friday, June 17, 2011
Making mix tapes, every music nerd does it. The book & movie High Fidelity sums up the art of making a mix perfectly, saying that;
is a very subtle art: many dos and don'ts. First of all, you're using someone else's poetry to express how you feel; this is a delicate thing. ...It takes ages longer than it might seem. You gotta kick it off with a killer, to grab attention. Then you gotta take it up a notch. But you don't want to blow your wad. So then you gotta cool it off a notch. There are a lot of rules.
I make mix tapes... well CD's now. Lot's of them really. Most of my mixes revolve around driving. I have a whole series of mixes called Sunset Run. Eleven of them to be exact. These mixes I make for those long days on the road, design specifically to be played at sunset.

Diane has observed that my mixes are like little time capsules, revealing where my head was at the time that I made them. I suppose that is true. When I make a mix, I am viewing my life in my head like record drops in a Scorsese movie. They represent the current soundtrack of my life. This weeks pick six is the opening six songs of a mix called Semi-Acoustical set, but really it's about love and loss and the complications of being in a relationship.
  1. Water Song – Colin Hay
  2. Romeo & Juliet – Dire Straits
  3. Reason to Believe – Bruce Springsteen
  4. What If I Do (Acoustic) – Foo Fighter
  5. Waiting in the Weeds – Eagles
  6. Southern Cross – Crosby, Stills & Nash
I don't have a lot to say about the songs themselves, but today, I am making a mix for Diane;
The making of a great compilation tape, like breaking up is hard to do. It takes ages longer than it might seem. You gotta kick it off with a killer to grab attention. Then you gotta take it up a notch. But you don't want to blow your wad. So then you gotta cool it off a notch. There are a lot of rules. Anyway, I've started to make a tape, in my head, for [Diane]. Full of stuff she'd like. Full of stuff that'd make her happy. For the first time I can sorta see how that's done.
Maybe that will be next weeks Pick Six. Videos, as always, after the jump.

Reason to Believe (Live) - Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band
