New Bands You Might Like

Saturday, June 11, 2011
After a suggestion from Beth and El Kaiser Guapo's Friday pick six, I thought I would play a game of 'if you like x you will like y', featuring some bands and singers that are pretty cool.

First up, if you like the harmonies of mid period Beach Boys , Simon & Garfunkel and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young you will like Fleet Foxes. Band founders Robin Pecknold and Skyler Skjelset grew up listening to Dylan, Neil Young and country greats like Hank Williams. Fleet Foxes have a sound that is both comfortably familiar and vital.

If you like The Cure you will like Glasvegas's second album 'EUPHORIC /// HEARTBREAK \\\'. A Scottish rock band whose influences are hard to pin down, Glasvegas has earned a special spot on my iPod.

If you like folk music of any kind, you will like Johnny Flynn. Flynn and his band The Sussex Wit combine classic folk music and blue grass with traditional english instruments to create a sound that is wonderful. Start with A Larum, but don't miss their sophomore offering, Been Listening. Any song writer thats lists W.B. Yeats as an influence deserves to be on your cd shelf.

If you like Steve Reich, you will like Sufjan Stevens. Nominally considered to an alt folk rocker, Sufjan is really a unique artist unto himself. A great banjo player, Sufjan's melodies and heartfelt minimalism are wonderful. I recommend (Come on Feel The) Illinois and Welcome To Michigan, then Seven Swans as nice introduction to his work.

This brings me to Alternative Country. This is my latest musical obsession and I can't pick any single person I think you should be listening to other than... all of them. Eschewing the increasingly poppy highly produced music that is modern country, groups and singers like Kurt Wagner & Lambchop, Courtney Tidwell, Mark Kozelek and Magnolia Electric Co. have brought back the sounds of classic country and merged it with minimalist production and instrumentation. So if you like Wilco or Son Volt, you will like 99% of the new alt country sounds.
