Six of the Best From New Music Tuesday January to May 2011

Friday, May 20, 2011
I always have taken pride in being able to pick up on bands or singers before they hit the big time. This has been a good year for some these newly established stars to break through. At least three groups/singers on our list break the myth of the 'sophmore slump' with amazing second albums.

Adele's 21 is an album I might need to reconsider rating. We rate albums from 0 to 4 stars with 0 being a F and 4 being an A. I gave 21 3.5 stars, making it a strong B+. After watching this album go 24x Platinum in the UK and Platinum in the US and many other countries as well as take the number one spot on the Billboard Top 200 for nine weeks, I may need to upgrade it to 4 stars.

Maybe I should consider giving it the magical 5 stars, which means 'instant classic' and is reserved for very very special artistic endeavors. 21 is having an impact much like Alanis Morrisette's Jagged Little Pill in 1995. In an age of over produced, overhyped and autotuned cookie cutter singers, Adele is quite refreshing. Check out the live version Don't You Remember after the jump.

Some critics have been tossing around accolades and comparisons to Carol King's Tapestry. I don't know about that, but I think Adele at least deserves an A (four stars) for the extra credit work.

Here is this weeks pick six:
  1. I Should of Known – Wasting Light, Foo Fighters
  2. Helplessness Blues – Helplessness Blues, Fleet Foxes
  3. Who's Gonna' Love Me Know – Invariable Heartache, Kurt Wagner & Cortney Tidwell Present Kort
  4. Don't You Remember – 21, Adele
  5. Long Time – Showroom of Compassion, Cake
  6. Euphoria, Take My Hand – EUPHORIC /// HEARTBREAK \\\, Glasvegas
