Friday Pick Six Valentine's Songs!

Friday, February 11, 2011
This is the first post in a special back to back edition of the Friday Pick Six, with this one being dedicated to of you out there with someone special to spend your upcoming Sunday with! One of the beautiful things about good music is in its power to move us emotionally, and modern music is chock full of love songs so certainly there is no shortage of romantic songs to listen to this weekend. However, for the first part of this Friday Pick Six, I want to share six of my personal favorite romantic songs.

1: Wouldn't It Be Nice, by the Beach Boys
2: Stolen, by Dashboard Confessional
3: Collide, by Howie Day
4: You and Me, by Lifehouse
5: Suspension, by Mae
6: Chasing Cars, by Snow Patrol

Like any good list, I'll start with a beautiful song anyone will recognize (hopefully), Wouldn't It Be Nice by the Beach Boys. Wouldn't It Be Nice perfectly expresses the feelings of young lovers, even decades later. Most Romantic Line: "You know it seems the more we talk about it, it only makes it worse to live without it..."

Second, I start with a trio of songs that most readers will probably recognize upon listening, but may not know the artist. The first of these is Stolen, by Dashboard Confessional. I'll admit that this is certainly a love song aimed at a younger audience, given that, as you would assume from the title, it is a song about completely falling for someone. Most Romantic Line: "You are the best one, oh the best one, and we all look like we feel..."

Third (and second in the aforementioned trio of songs) is Collide by Howie Day, a song quite literally about waking up next to the person you love. Most Romantic Line: "I've found I'm scared to know I'm always on your mind..."

Fourth, and finishing off the trio of songs you'll probably recognize upon listening, is You and Me by Lifehouse, a song that has been used so much on television and film that I really will be shocked if you don't recognize it. Most Romantic Line: "And I don't know why, I can't keep my eyes off of you..."

Coming in fifth is a song that I know most people won't recognize, so it's kind of the plug spot for one of my personal favorite bands. The song is Suspension by Mae, another song probably most effective with a younger audience, a song about when you realize you've fallen in love with someone. Most Romantic Line: "Say anything, but say what you mean when you whisper you want this. Your eyes tell the same."

Ending this romantic collection of pop-rock tunes is Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol, and only partly because I keep trying to push Scottish rock bands on people. I felt it was good to end with this song because thematically it ties to my first pick: the song is about wanting to spend the time you have with someone. Most Romantic Line: "I need your grace to remind me to find my own."
