Friday Soul!

While we wait to see what's coming up and who's going to compile the TGIF pick six, let's play some Which Is Better. Because I am listening to the Commitments soundtrack, we are going look at some of their covers verses the original.

First up is Destination Anywhere, written by Ashford & Simpson and first popularized by The Marvelettes;
1. The Original - The Marvelletes

2. Niamh Kavanagh (The Commitments)

Chain of Fools, written by Don Covay, has been covered by a lot of people, and probably deserves it's own entry into Which Is Better. This one is kind of a no brainer for me, but here you go:
1. Aretha Franklin

2. The Commitment-ettes

Mustang Sally, written by Mack Rice and first popularized by Wilson Pickett.
1. Wilson Pickett

2. The Commitments

Last up we have Dark End Of The Street, written by Muscle Shoals songwriters Dan Penn and Chips Moman and first performed by James Carr is another song deserving it's own Which Is Better. A fave of mine is the Flying Burrito Brothers cover.
1. James Carr

2. The Commitments

1 comment :

  1. Commitments: Dark End of the Street, Destination Anywhere

    Original: Mustang Sally, Chain of Fools

    Though I'll admit I love the Commitments version of all those songs! Both the Commitments and Once are too under-rated in my opinion.
