I will be offline for awhile.

I am going to have surgery tomorrow. I have kept it pretty low key, both online and in real life. I have shared with some close online friends and some of my co-workers.

The main reason I haven't said much, was, frankly, I didn't need all the "feedback" and advice. It isn't that I can't take feedback or that I don't need advice, but in this case I am fairly well informed.

I have had three prior discectomies, so I have dealt with back & sciatic pain since my mid twenties. I have heard or tried every medical, homeopathic or just plain weird suggestion or treatment out there.

Over the past three years I have tried everything for pain relief. I have been to physical therapy. I have purchased a TENS device. I have had lumbar epidural injections. None of which worked. I have known for some time that my only solution at some point would be to have a fusion.

Spinal fusion is one of those big scary kind of decisions. Old timers would tell me how "It didn't help a damn thing". Other people would bring up the point that you are just pushing the degenerative disc problem up your spine. For me, the biggest concern, was and still is, the recovery time. This is not to say I will be bedridden for months, but the list of things I am not allowed to do for a year is pretty big.

I am hopeful that this surgery will be successful relieving some of my pain. The doctor performing the surgery seems pretty well informed and experienced. Wish me luck and keep me in your thoughts, everybody. I will be back online when I get back home.

Jay

For the curious I am having the following procedures:
  • Laminotomy W/Decompress Nerve Root, One Interspace, Lumbar
  • Allograft For Spine Surgery, Structural
  • Autograft Spine Surgery Only, Local Obtained From Same Incision
  • Appl Intervertebral Biomech Dev To Vertebral Defect/Interspace
  • Posterior Non Segmental Instrumentation
  • Arthrodesis, Post Interbody Tech, Single Interspace - Lumbar
What does this mean in layman's terms? Basically they are going to fix the spacing between L4/L5 & L5/S1 using either bone from another part of my body or using some other material. They will also perform a laminotomy to decompress my L5/S1 left nerve bundle. Then they will put screws in them to hold it all together.
This is blog post  110 for 2010. Only 31 more to go to meet last years output.
