I actually have two from after Automatic for the People or An Actual By God Friday Pick Six!

Friday, October 15, 2010
In this blog post yesterday, I mentioned that 1987 was when my favorite all time R.E.M. album, Document was released. When you saw the Pick Six, you might have been surprised that I didn't have an R.E.M. song included. After I realized that I decided, what the heck, I will have a Friday Pick Six of all R.E.M. songs1. I have not done a Friday Pick Six since July 9th 2010, so we are due.

This is a hard one, since I have been a long time R.E.M. I have been listening since Fables of The Reconstruction was released in 1985. Over the course of twenty seven years, they have released fourteen albums. Picking six songs from that body of work is going to be difficult.

The question when making a pick six is should you focus on the hits? To be sure, R.E.M., have had a number of Hot 100 singles in their history. Should you focus on the more obscure songs? We all have those songs from a favorite album that was not the most popular song2, but it spoke to us. In the end, this pick six has a nice grouping of popular and semi obscure choices.
  1. Driver 8 - Fables of the Reconstruction
  2. Lightnin' Hopkins - Document (R.E.M. Number 5)
  3. Stand - Green
  4. Nightswimming - Automatic for the People
  5. Daysleeper - Up
  6. All The Way To Reno (You're Gonna Be A Star) - Reveal
Videos after the jump

Driver 8 - Live Acoustic Version from 1984

Stand - No Embedding :-( So have a link.
Nightswimming (Live)

All The Way To Reno - Live

1 -We have only done a Pick Six featuring a single artist or band once before.
2 - This sounds like an idea for a future Pick Six - Obscure Picks or Picks from the Heart?
This is blog post 97 for 2010. Only 44 more to go to meet last years output.
