Random Pick Six (plus) - Sunset Run 7 - One from the Ladies

Wednesday, December 09, 2009

I am sure I have mentioned this before, I have a penchant for creating special mixes that I play when on a long road trip. These mixes are designed for playing at dusk, when the sun slides away and the open road is before me.

Usually I choose these mixes based on lyrical content rather than rhythm. The point is that I am usually in a very thoughtful mood at this time of night and never more so than after a long day on the road.

Prior to this, I had created six of these mixes with artists including Ben Folds, U2, Eric Johnson, Steely Dan, Van Morrison, Heart, Berlin, Springsteen and others. As an aside, listening to the Boss & The E Street Band performing The River off of the Live in New York City album while driving into the dusk is very nearly a transcendent experience. Every time it happens I get chills when the first mournful wails of Clarence Clemon's sax coming over my car speakers. The entirety of the Born To Run album has the same effect on me, especially Meeting Across the River / Jungleland which, as I have noted before is the greatest finishing one/two punch in the history of rock.

About two weeks ago, I started considering a Sunset Run 7. Going through my previous mixes, I saw that my favorite female singers and songwriters were woefully underrepresented. I decided it was high time I remedied that and I set about creating a mix that only featured some of my favorites from some of of my favorite female singers.
  1. Best for Last - ADELE
  2. Alright - Ledisi
  3. You Were Meant For Me - Jewel
  4. Who Will Comfort Me - Melody Gardot

  6. Run - Amy MacDonald
  7. The Boy from Ipanema - Diana Krall

*I apologize to my friends outside of the US if some of those videos are not viewable. I am still not sure how to proxy a Youtube playlist or video. If you know how to do this, leave me a comment.

  1. What a fabulous list! Quite a variety; from Carole King to Diana Krall to Blondie...wow. Where's Norah Jones?

  2. Lol, you are right, Daisy. And I left Annie Lennox off, too.
