Random Musings - My Top 3 Weirdest Concert Moments

Saturday, August 29, 2009
After attending Green Day's concert in Salt Lake City last week, I started thinking about the funniest, weirdest or coolest things I have either seen or done at a concert. As an avid music nerd and concert goer for over thirty years (damn, 30 years? I am OLD!!!), I have participated in or seen many a strange thing going on in arenas and stadiums.

This list could be longer, but these are the three weirdest or funny things that I have seen at a concert.
3. In 2005, I took my son (aged 15) to see Dave Matthews Band at the USANA Amphitheater in Salt Lake City. We had okay seats in the lower area and were seated next to a couple that proceeded to get not just drunk, but sloppy drunk. Fine. People drink at concerts. These two started making out... and... well, let's just say they weren't sober enough to remember they were actually at a concert and they started to get a little risque.

Having my son standing next to me while two drunken forty somethings were feeling each other up at concert was more than just a little uncomfortable. We moved up to the grass and sat near the fence for the rest of the show. Not surprisingly, we weren't the only ones who left that section to find seating elsewhere.

2. Denver, Mile High Stadium, 1984. Springsteen's Born in the USA tour. We were on the floor of the stadium, and directly in front of us was a 'real' Springsteen fan, wearing her home made 'Boss' jean jacket. I guess she felt the rest of the people weren't worthy of being in her company. When Springsteen was singing Thunder Road, in the part where The Boss sings "I ain't a beauty" and the crowd will call back "But hey you're all right" and many of the people in the surrounding rows didn't do it, she glared at everyone like some disapproving school teacher. 'Real' fans are funny.

1. Another one from USANA. Rush's 2007 Snakes & Arrows Tour. Sitting on the grass. Some lady gets up, in a huff and walks over to two of West Valley City's finest. Apparently some people where smoking pot near her and she is going off on a rant about how they are 'ruining it for everybody'. Hah! Someone tell that lady to never, ever go to a Phish concert.

Have you had any weird or funny concert experiences?
