Friday Pick Six - Music to Drive By

Friday, May 15, 2009

I have make mix tapes... or more accurately mix CD's. Like most music geeks, I ascribe to the idea that you can take a group of songs, blend them together and make the perfect mood setting music.
The making of a great compilation tape, like breaking up is hard to do. It takes ages longer than it might seem. You gotta kick it off with a killer to grab attention. Then you gotta take it up a notch. But you don't want to blow your wad. So then you gotta cool it off a notch. There are a lot of rules. - High Fidelity
One of the more common mixes I make I refer to as Sunset Run Mixes. These are mixes of songs that are specifically designed for pop in the player towards the end of a hard driving day as the sun set around you. Think less rock, more melodic. Atmospheric. With good story telling.

Anyway, I have made six of these so far, so I thought I would pick 6 at random from those lists.
  1. A Whiter Shade of Pale - Procul Harum, Procul Harum
  2. Oh Very Young - Cat Stevens, Buddha and the Chocolate Box
  3. A Thousand Years - Sting, Brand New Day
  4. Today - Smashing Pumpkins, Siamese Dream
  5. All Apologies - Nirvana , In Utero
  6. Casimir Pulaski Day - Sufjan Stevens, Come On Feel The Illinoise!

Procul Harum - A Whiter Shade Of Pale

One more - Night Ranger - Sister Christian (see post above)
