Friday Pick Six - All GnR or Yeah, It's Got a Song From Chinese Democracy On It. Your Point Is?

Friday, January 09, 2009

I am on at least my 20th listening of Chinese Democracy, and I can't tell if it is great or just ehh. I mean, the triumvirate of Shackler's Revenge, Better & Street of Dreams following the title track, are as good as any Guns N' Roses song could be, even without Slash & Duff, but none of the songs match either the raw power found Appetite For Destruction or the completely engrossing and over the top rock & roll that is Use Your Illusion I & II.

Use Your Illusion I & II over the top? Seriously, in the waning days of the hair metal standard of release an 'up song' and a power ballad to go gold, listen to November Rain. Don't tell me Axl and the boys weren't saying 'You want a damn power ballad? We'll give you a power ballad. And it will have two damn guitar solos!'. So, yeah, I think it's a little over the top. Not that that's a bad thing.

Back to Chinese Democracy. It is growing on me. It has become part of my play cycle. So maybe it's not 'eh' but I still don't know if it's great. Here is your Friday Pick Six:

1. If The World - Chinese Democracy
2. Sweet Child O Mine - Appetite For Destruction
3. Knockin' On Heavens Door - Use Your Illusion II
4. Paradise City - Appetite For Destruction
5. November Rain - Use Your Illusion I
6. Welcome To The Jungle - Appetite For Destruction
